Finally: A Real Bike Shop in Lakeville
If you've lived in Lakeville for a while, you know the drill. Your bike breaks, you're watching YouTube at midnight trying to fix it, or you're cramming it into your car for the 45-minute drive to Burnsville.
That just changed.
Downtown Bicycles opened in Lakeville this July, and they're already making life easier for local cyclists.
The Story
Downtown Bicycles started in Northfield 16 years ago. Josh, who runs the Lakeville shop (and whose dad founded the business), says they'd been eyeing Lakeville for years.
"It's a growing community. We had customers from here. It just made sense."
The hard part? Finding retail space in a town where most of it is owned by big corporations. When they saw space in a new building, they grabbed it.
They wanted to open in March. Then May. Then June. July 18th was finally the day.
What They Offer
Bikes: They sell Trek and Cannondale—two brands known for quality and innovation.
Accessories: If they don't have it in stock, they can usually order it and have it within days.
Service: This is where they shine.
"We want a service department where the guy working on your bike isn't scary," Josh says. "He wants to talk to you."
They'll work on anything—even those internet e-bikes that other shops won't touch. The process is simple:
You come in with your bike
They look at it while you're there
They tell you what's wrong, what it'll cost, and how long it'll take
No surprises when you pick it up
Since opening, the feedback has been consistent: personable, good value, bikes riding better than ever.

The Tip That'll Save You Money
I asked Josh: what's the biggest mistake new bike owners make?
"Not putting air in their tires."
Modern bike tubes hold air for days or weeks—not months. When there's not enough air, the tube folds on itself and goes flat.
His advice? Put air in your tires every week. You'll avoid most flat tires just by doing that.
Why They're Different
Downtown Bicycles is a family business that wants to stay that way. Josh went to college planning to be a teacher, worked at another bike shop, and only came back when his dad asked him to help with the Lakeville location.
"It's special when it's your dad and you've seen the business from the beginning."
They're not trying to be corporate or turn into an e-commerce giant. They want to be the shop where you can come in, chat about riding, and feel like someone actually cares about getting you back on your bike.
