Why This School Matters Now

The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District (District 196) has opened its 20th elementary school to address growing enrollment and enhance learning environments across our area. This exciting milestone comes courtesy of the Building Our Future bond referendum, which District 196 voters approved in May 2023.

Emerald Trail Elementary represents more than just additional classroom space, it's a commitment to innovative education and environmental stewardship that will serve our community for generations.

Where You'll Find It

Address: 13600 Ardroe Ave, Rosemount, MN 55068
Location: Near Akron Avenue and Bonaire Path

The school now serves students from adjusted attendance boundaries that include areas previously designated for Rosemount Elementary and Red Pine Elementary. Parents can find enrollment information and current class sizes on the district website.

A Name That Tells Our Story

After reviewing over 600 community suggestions, a parent stakeholder group unanimously selected "Emerald Trail"—and the reasoning is beautiful.

"Emerald" honors Rosemount's Irish heritage, connecting to our settlement roots from the Emerald Isle and our high school's Irish mascot. It also symbolizes growth, vitality, and community. No other Minnesota school shares this name, giving us a truly unique identity.

"Trail" reflects the school's natural setting, with abundant green space and wetland areas. Purpose-built walking and biking paths will connect to city and county trail systems, encouraging active transportation. This marks the first time District 196 has incorporated "trail" into a school name.

A Green School for a Green Future

Here's what makes Emerald Trail Elementary truly special: it's designed to be net-zero ready. This means the building will be so energy-efficient that on-site renewable systems can offset most or all of its energy needs.

Sustainability highlights:

  • All-electric building—no natural gas needed

  • Geothermal heating and cooling powered by 440 underground wells

  • Sustainable landscaping throughout the campus

  • Energy systems designed for minimal environmental impact

These aren't just buzzwords—they represent real cost savings and environmental benefits that will serve our community for decades. The "green" design perfectly matches the "Emerald" in our school's name.

Leadership and Vision

Principal Chad Ryburn leads Emerald Trail Elementary with a vision of creating "a place where students, staff, and families come together to grow, learn, and thrive." The school is fostering kind leaders, problem-solvers, and trailblazers who will make their mark on the world.

The school opened with a full staff of dedicated educators ready to serve our community.
