We need to tell you about a change coming to the Lakeville License Center.
Remember how you could walk in, get your license, and walk out the same day?
That's ending on October 31st. After that, things go back to the way most license centers work, you'll get a temporary paper license at your appointment, and your permanent card will show up in the mail.
So What Happened?
Here's the thing: the same-day cards caused a lot of headaches.
They looked different from regular Minnesota licenses, different enough that a lot of places thought they were fake. We're talking bars refusing to serve people, banks turning customers away, and even TSA agents at the airport pulling people aside for questioning. One person was actually taken to a police station and fingerprinted because their card looked suspicious.
The state tried this as a pilot program starting back in 2022, and after looking at how it went, they decided it just wasn't working out. More than 800 people actually paid extra to replace their same-day card with a regular one because they kept running into problems.
What This Means for You
Nothing dramatic. The Lakeville License Center is still open and still doing everything they normally do. Your hours are:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday: 10:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.
If you really need your license fast, you can still pay $20 for expedited service and get it shipped to you in about ten business days.
